The Pentagon agreed Friday that an Army National Guard Base in California will temporarily house unaccompanied migrant children, according to a defense official. It’s unclear how many children will be placed at Camp Roberts. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Saturday that the camp’s use is “under active consideration,” indicating the decision isn’t final just yet. “When HHS decides to activate an Emergency Influx Site for unaccompanied migrant children we will notify state and local authorities as well as members of Congress,” said the department in a statement. Border Patrol Facilities’ Resources ‘Stretched Beyond Thin’

An independent monitor analyzed U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities housing migrant children and said the facilities are “stretched beyond thin” with unsafe conditions. The report was filed late Friday to a federal court in Los Angeles. Two inspectors appointed by U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee observed the conditions at southern Texas facilities, and said they found “severe overcrowding” with social distancing “functionally impossible.” The report from March said overcrowding at CBP’s main facility for minors and families in Donna, Texas was so extreme that on specific days, there was no space in between the mats migrants slept on. Texas GOP Congressional Candidate Doesn’t Want Chinese Immigrants to Come to U.S.

Sery Kim, a Republican congressional candidate in Texas and veteran of the Trump administration’s Small Business Administration said she didn’t want Chinese immigrants to come to the U.S. and blamed them for the spread of coronavirus. “I don’t want them here,” said the Korean American during a forum for candidates running for the 6th Congressional District seat in Dallas-Fort Worth. “They steal our intellectual property, they give us coronavirus, they don’t hold themselves accountable.” Kin also said that she’s allowed to make these comments because she is Korean. The Dallas Fort Worth Asian-American Citizens Council responded by saying ”Ms. Kim being of Korean descent does not give her license to use harmful language against Chinese or any ethnic group.” NBC News

Migrants Escorted Back to Mexico

CBP agents are escorting migrants, many who have no idea where they’re headed, across a bridge that goes from El Paso, Texas, to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Dozens of migrants are being ejected daily by Title 42, the health protocol the Trump administration put in place to reject migrants due to COVID-19. Some people are being admitted into the U.S. to start their asylum process, but that’s mainly limited to unaccompanied minors and parents with very young children. Despite President Joe Biden’s promise to halt deportations and reverse Trump policies, most adults and families are being apprehended and taken on a confusing journey before they find out they’re back in Mexico. The Guardian
