On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) issued an executive order restricting border entries in the state. He claimed this order will decrease COVID-19 infections, despite the fact that Texas doesn’t have mask mandate or other COVID-19 restrictions. Attorney General Merrick Garland then threatened to sue Texas over the executive order, calling it “dangerous and unlawful” and a risk to public health. The order seems to be targeting non-governmental organizations that would transport migrants from Customs and Border Patrol stations to shelters and other destinations. U.S. officials working on border policy say the rise in COVID-19 cases in Mexico has led the Biden administration to continue to hold off on eliminating its order allowing for rapid expulsions of border crossers. Republicans have scolded President Joe Biden for wanting to terminate the public health policy enacted under former President Donald Trump. But Biden is also receiving heat from advocates who have been calling for the end of the policy since it prevents most asylum seekers from applying for humanitarian protection. Last month, officials said the government was preparing to end Title 42, but the influx of delta variant cases complicated that goal. The Washington Post

Harris’ 18-Page Migration Strategy for Central America

Vice President Kamala Harris released a strategy addressing the main causes of migration to the U.S. from Central America. The 18-page report groups her strategy for reducing migration into several pillars, such as addressing economic insecurity and inequality, combatting corruption and enhancing the democratic governance and advocating respect for human rights. The pillars also call for fighting violence and crimes committed by criminal gangs and trafficking networks, including sexual, gender-based and domestic violence. The Hill
