The Center for Migration Studies of New York created a map based on Census Bureau microdata that show trends among the undocumented and eligible-to-be-naturalized populations at the national, state and sub-state levels. New York state and New York City have the highest percentage of undocumented individuals 18 or older with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, with 21.2% having a Bachelor’s degree and 20.7% having higher. The poverty rate for undocumented immigrants decreased from 28.5% in 2010 to 19.6% in 2019, the data showed. It also shows the U.S.’s undocumented population dropped 12% over the last decade.City Limits

Two Upcoming Immigration Protests in New York City

The Undeniable Squad is taking action on Tuesday, August 17 throughout the U.S. to demand Democrats in Congress provide citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants. The in-person actions are part of a National Week of Action between Aug. 14 to 20. In New York City, immigration youth and allies are hosting a rally outside of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services District Office in Foley Square from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Cities across the U.S. are participating in the protest. U Squad leaders are organizing these rallies to get permanent protection for all immigrants and to hold President Joe Biden and Congress accountable to provide solutions for communities.

The Clemency Coalition of New York and allies are holding a rally on Wednesday to demand New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) grant James Pamphile a pardon from deportation. Pamphile, who has been an NYC resident for 20 years and is HIV positive, faces deportation to Haiti. He’s scheduled to check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement this Wednesday, where he could be detained and deported. Since Pamphile has faced persecution in Haiti, there’s a possibility that his deportation may lead to a death sentence. The Clemency Coalition of New York says Haiti “would not be a safe and stable place” for him. The rally will be held Wednesday, August 18 at 9 a.m. in Foley Square. Deanna Garcia for Documented.
