DHS Designates Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status for 18 months

Plus: The Biden administration also grants Temporary Protected Status to Sudan, and an extension for South Sudan

The Department of Homeland Security on Thursday designated Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status for 18 months. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas credited the designation to “the full-scale Russian military invasion into Ukraine, which marks the largest conventional military action in Europe since World War I.” Individuals eligible for TPS under the designation must have continuously resided in the United States since March 1, 2022. Those who attempt to travel to the United States after March 1, 2022 will not be eligible.

The Biden administration also granted a new Temporary Protected Status designation for Sudan, and extended TPS for South Sudan by 18 months. “Sudan is currently experiencing political instability and unrest, and armed conflict in South Sudan has displaced millions of residents,” said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a statement. Individuals newly eligible for TPS must have continuously resided in the U.S. since March 1, 2022. TPS protects qualified migrants from these countries from deportation and can allow them to get jobs.
