Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders now face the widest gap in income inequality of any group in the U.S., according to the Pew Research Center. The gap has almost doubled since 1970. One researcher from Pew said the gap widened because of immigration patterns starting in the ’70s. During that time, the population of newcomers became less educated than before. NPR

ACLU Fear Mass Deportations to Come After Zero Tolerance

Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union are concerned that efforts to reunite children separated from their parents at the border could coincide with mass deportations after the families are reunited, according to a legal filing. Lawyers for the ACLU said there are “persistent and increasing rumors — which defendants have refused to deny — that mass deportations may be carried out imminently and immediately upon reunification.” Federal Judge Dana M. Sabraw temporarily blocked the government from deporting families separated by border authorities under the zero-tolerance policy. The New York Times

Republicans were more likely to support the travel ban, the border wall and changes to visas and other means of legal migration. Most respondents opposed the border wall and Trump’s travel ban and other legal immigration restrictions. Trump’s least popular policy was family separation. Nearly 70 percent of respondents were opposed to it. NPR

Washington – Democrats Introduce Family Separation Countermeasure

Democrats have introduced a new bill that will act as a countermeasure to the effects of the family separation policy on Tuesday. They are seeking to “immediately” reunite 2,600 immigrant children separated from their parents due to the policies.

Sen. Kamala Harris is a sponsor of the bill. She said she was introducing the measure to “ensure that never again will the United States government have the ability or the power to separate children from their parents in the way that has been done.” Other sponsors include Sens. Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada.

The bill would write into law some of the directives ordered by federal judges as well as providing measures to help facilitate the reunification process. The bill would order DHS and the Department of Health and Human Services formalize and publish guidance on how they will reunite the families, release parents from detention so they are not reunited in federal custody, provide the children with lawyers and refrain from deporting parents until their children’s cases are complete, among other measures. Republicans Offered to Introduce a Bill to Abolish ICE. Democrats Called Their BluffHouse Speaker Paul Ryan reneged on the offer to introduce a bill abolishing ICE after Democrats said they would vote against the bill in an effort to preempt the apparent stunt. Reps. Mark Pocan, Pramila Jayapal and Adriano Espaillat introduced the bill, and all said they would vote no on it. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus also came out against the proposal. “We know Speaker Ryan is not serious about passing our ‘Establishing a Humane Immigration Enforcement System Act,’ so members of Congress, advocacy groups, and impacted communities will not engage in this political stunt.” Instead, Republicans say they will vote on a bill that expresses support for ICE.
