A group of advocates in Bend, Oregon, protesting the detention of two men surrounded a bus they were on and stayed there for 12 hours in protest. U.S. Border Patrol officers used pepper spray on the demonstrators to disperse them. But the next day, people gathered in Bend once again to decry the detention and question the involvement of local law enforcement. “We don’t know if they have been fed. We don’t know if they have slept. We don’t have any information,” said Janet Llerandi-Gonzalez, the director of Director of Mecca Bend, a local organization. The Associated Press

Private Prison Companies Bet on Republican Party

Executives at two of the country’s largest private prison companies — the largest detainers of immigrants — have been donating large sums of money to President Trump. The CEO of GEO Group, one of the companies, said he expected Trump’s re-election could stoke its stock price. CoreCivic and GEO Group made about $1.3 billion last year in contracts with the federal government last year. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has committed to ending the use of private prisons to detain immigrants. GEO Group and CoreCivic recently signed long-term contracts for several immigration jails in Texas and California. Executives at both companies have donated primarily to the Republican party. Biden Promised a 100-Day Deportation Moratorium. It’s Not in His Policy Documents

On Tuesday, Joe Biden’s presidential campaign released a new agenda to address economic inequality that Latino communities across the U.S. face. Nowhere in the agenda, or on the campaign’s website, does Biden’s team say it will establish a 100-day moratorium on deportation of immigrants living in the U.S. Biden first made the promise to establish a moratorium during a CNN town hall before the Nevada caucuses. He reiterated his commitment on March 15, but hasn’t mentioned it since. A campaign spokesperson said he “absolutely remains his position” on the moratorium and “will not change at any point,” but didn’t address why the policy had been absent from his website. ICE Detainees Doused with Disinfectant

Detainees at the Adelanto ICE immigration jail just outside of Los Angeles say they are being doused with HDQ Neutral, an industrial disinfectant, according to activists from Shut Down Adelanto Coalition and environmental law non-profit, Earthjustice. The disinfectant is allegedly being sprayed every 20-30 minutes at the facility to stop the spread of COVID-19. The manufacturer said the spray is only supposed to be used outdoors or in well-ventilated areas and it can cause skin burns and serious eye damage. People who have been sprayed have reportedly suffered health complications such as rashes, breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea. The Independent
