9 Anti-ICE Protesters Arrested Outside Bergen County Jail

Detainees are on a hunger strike to demand their release amid unsafe coronavirus conditions at Bergen County Jail.

On Saturday evening, nine people, including eight New Yorkers, were arrested during anti-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests outside of New Jersey’s Bergen County Jail. The protesters were charged with offenses such as obstruction of government function, disorderly conduct, aggravated assault on police officers and resisting arrest, Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton said. Over the past month, protests have aimed to raise awareness of detainees on a hunger strike to challenge unsafe conditions at the jail amid the coronavirus pandemic. Six People Injured at ICE Protest in Manhattan

A black BMW sedan hit six individuals during a Friday protest on Third Avenue in support of the ICE detainees on a hunger strike in New Jersey detention centers. The driver, Kathleen Casillo, was charged with reckless endangerment on Friday. The protesters were chanting “Free them all, free them now,” right before Casillo rammed through an intersection and hit people. The six people who were hit did not have life-threatening injuries. Nicolle L. Besuden, a protester, was also charged with obstruction of governmental administration and disorderly conduct. She said a police officer was making her friend, who was hit by the vehicle, uncomfortable and got in their faces. The New York Times

Immigrant Father Killed By Hit-And-Run

Manuel Jose Enealada-Villa, an Ecuadorian immigrant, was crossing by the corner of E. 110th Street and Third Avenue and was hit by a 2020 Honda Accord on Saturday morning. The driver, Michael Rajpaul, continued down Third Avenue and lost control at 115 Street, where the car flipped on its side. Officers pronounced Enealada-Villa dead at the scene, which was three blocks from his home. Enealada-Villa’s wife said he had lived in the city since the early 2000s and worked as a construction worker to provide for his children back home. Rajpaul was charged with manslaughter, assault and reckless driving and held on $75,000 bail. New York Daily News

New York Men Allegedly Smuggled Vietnamese Citizens To Nail Salons

Long Island resident Manh Ngoc Nguyen and Bronx resident Dat Tat Ho are facing charges for allegedly smuggling Vietnamese citizens into New York between January 2017 and September 2020 to work at nail salons for low wages. They were charged in federal court for allegedly scheming to defraud the government and smuggling undocumented immigrants. Nguyen and Ho managed several nail and hair salons in Long Island, Queens and the Bronx, and allegedly forced non-citizens to make false statements to U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services and submit forged asylum applications. Nguyen and Ho will be detained until their trial and will face from 5-15 years in prison. Daily Voice
