Over two-thirds of undocumented workers have jobs considered “essential” in the fight against COVID-19, according to a study from pro-immigration group FWD.US. Sixty-nine percent of the workers have jobs deemed essential by the Department of Homeland Security. The Trump administration has used job security for Americans as a reason for cracking down on immigration. In April, he signed an executive order that would temporarily suspend immigration to “ensure that unemployed Americans of all backgrounds will be first in line for jobs as our economy reopens.” NBC News

During the same period, the population of undocumented immigrants from Asia grew from 866,000 to 1.5 million and Central Americans grew from 1.5 million to 1.8 million. Migration Policy Institute

ICE Attorney Frantically Tries to Stop Deportation of Children

A top Immigration and Customs Enforcement attorney tried to get agents to turn a deportation flight around just as it arrived in Guatemala last month. On Nov. 18, 32 children were being rapidly expelled to Guatemala in accordance with a pandemic-era rule that allows border agents to rapidly expel any non-citizens attempting to come into the U.S. But after a federal court order barred the rapid deportation of children, ICE and this attorney were still rushing to comply. The order came shortly before the flight took off from Louisiana headed for Guatemala. ICE said four of the children on the flight had tested positive for COVID-19. BuzzFeed News

ICE Denies Surgery to 4-Year-Old Girl with Broken Arm, Prepares to Deport Her

ICE is preparing to deport more than a dozen immigrant children held in a Texas immigration jail, including a 4-year-old girl with a broken arm requiring surgery. Doctors at the family immigration jail in Dilley, Texas, diagnosed the girl with a fracture and prescribed painkillers due to the ongoing injury. They said she needed surgery within 6 months to a year. But her attorney said ICE has denied her surgery and declined to release her so she can have surgery in the U.S. while she pursues her case. The girl’s detention continues even after a federal judge ordered ICE to release all children held in its three detention centers back in June. Associated Press

Report: ICE Kept Detainees in Solitary Confinement For Over 300 Days

ICE kept nearly a dozen immigrants in solitary confinement for more than 2 months, including two for more than 300 days, a draft Department of Homeland Security Inspector General’s report obtained by BuzzFeed News shows. The report focused on the Imperial Regional Detention Facility in Calexico, California, where it found solitary confinement was used as a long-term “solution” for immigrants in “protective custody.” ICE also allows immigrants to be placed in a type of solitary confinement called “administrative segregation” for non-punitive reasons. The inspectors found ICE was not offering recreation time to detainees held in solitary, as is required. BuzzFeed News
