Trump Extends Bans on Work-Based Visas and Green Cards

Trump originally limited employment-based visas and green cards in April and June to allegedly protect American workers from competition.

Immigrants will be barred from coming to the U.S. on work-based visas and green cards until the end of March, the White House announced. President Donald Trump originally issued bans on employment-based visas and green cards in April and June to protect American workers from competition. Spouses and children 21 or younger of U.S. citizens are not included in the three month extension, as well as some health care workers who are helping during the pandemic and immigrant investors who agreed to invest more than $1 million in the U.S. The Wall Street Journal and CBS News

While some immigrants in the U.S. are excited for President-elect Joe Biden to take office later this month, others are feeling a mix of hope and caution. Gabriela Hernandez, a 22-year-old who came to the U.S. at five years old, said she is “not too big a fan” of Biden, but is “pretty optimistic that this administration is going to work with us.” Biden has said he will expand the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and organize a path to citizenship. But Jorge Benitez, a DACA recipient, fears Biden will continue former President Barack Obama’s deportation-heavy legacy. AFP
