📍 Documented Original On Thursday, Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo ordered the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to develop a vaccination plan for eligible detainees in the Buffalo Federal Detention Center in Batavia, New York. New York Civil Liberties Union said it believes this is the first court order in the U.S. mandating the acquisition of vaccines for people in ICE facilities. The Western District Court of New York noted incarcerated people are most vulnerable to the virus and not capable of controlling their own care, and that New York started giving vaccinations to those who are vulnerable in state prisons. WBFO recently reported that 30 detainees tested positive for COVID-19 at the facility. Deanna Garcia for Documented

ITIN Number: What it is and How to Get One

📍 Documented Original Documented’s WhatsApp community recently asked us how to obtain an ITIN number, also known as a Tax ID, as rumors suggested an immigration reform could give residency to undocumented immigrants who paid taxes. The ITIN, which stands for “Individual Taxpayer Identification Number,” is controlled by the IRS and used by foreigners who cannot have a Social Security Number. The identification is used to pay taxes on the economic income they get in the U.S. and identifies spouses and dependent children who do not have a Social Security Number to ensure taxpayers can claim an exemption for those dependents. COVID-19 Vaccines Limited for ICE Detainees in North Jersey

County jails in North Jersey have provided very few COVID-19 vaccines to inmates and ICE detainees so far. Data from the Marshall Project and The Associated Press showed the COVID-19 death rate among New Jersey inmates was the highest in the nation. But  Bergen, Passaic and Morris county officials said they are still planning vaccine distribution. Essex County has meanwhile given about 120 eligible inmates vaccinations, including 43 ICE detainees in its Newark facility, which holds 2,400 inmates. Paterson’s jail has only given vaccines to 20 percent of its corrections officers so far. North Jersey

Queens Man Arrested By ICE, Set for Deportation

ICE arrested Queens resident Alonso Castillo last month at a post office near his home. He had a standing order of removal against him, and is now in custody and awaiting deportation. Castillo’s attorney, Jacqueline Pearce with Make the Road New York, filed an urgent request for Castillo’s release due to his cardiac condition. She also argued Castillo shouldn’t be deported because the Biden administration is prioritizing people who are considered threats to national security. Castillo was arrested last year for a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, making him less of a priority under President Joe Biden. Spectrum News NY1
