Immigration advocates and immigrants took to the streets of Washington D.C. on Tuesday, pushing Congress to include a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants in the budget reconciliation package. Thousands of advocates marched from Benjamin Banneker Park toward the U.S. Capitol, with a stop at the headquarters of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The march, called “Welcome Back Congress — March for Citizenship, Care, and Climate,” was organized by CASA, a Latino and immigrant organization. CASA said that about 10,000 people attended. “We elected a Democrat majority in Congress, and they have pledged to deliver a path to citizenship. Now it’s up to us to make sure they deliver on that promise,” CASA Executive Director Gustavo Torres said in a statement. The Washington Post

Democrats Look for Citizenship Alternatives

After Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough determined congressional Democrats’ plan to grant a path to citizenship did not meet Senate rules for the budget reconciliation package, Democrats are eyeing a plan B. “It is my expectation that my colleagues and I will be going back to the parliamentarian with other options in the coming days,” Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) said Monday on a call with reporters. One of the top alternate possibilities could be a congressional mandate, which would essentially implement a statute of limitations for past unauthorized entries into the U.S. The Hill

Biden Keeps Migrant Expulsion Policy in Place

Immigration authorities have been declaring that Title 42, a public health order, lets them expel migrants crossing the border without allowing them to apply for asylum. The Trump administration started using Title 42 during the COVID-19 pandemic to curb immigration on the southern border. Though President Biden said he would create a more “humane” immigration system when he came into office, his administration has kept using the Title 42 policy to push migrants out of the country. NPR examines how the Biden administration is trying to use Title 42 to expel a group of largely-Haitian migrants from under an encampment in Del Rio, Texas. NPR
