Fauci Emphatic that Immigrants Aren’t Driving Covid Cases

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, said on CNN this weekend that immigrants are “absolutely not” a major reason why COVID-19 is spreading in the United States, clapping back against a major Republican talking point that has emerged in recent months. Data regarding who has gotten sick and died of Covid has shown immigrants aren’t the cause, Fauci said. “When you have 700,000 Americans dead and millions and millions and millions of Americans getting infected, you don’t want to look outside to the problem. The problem is within our own country,” Fauci said. “Certainly immigrants can get infected, but they’re not the driving force of this, let’s face reality here.” Forbes

Refugee Admissions Hit a Record Low

Refugee admissions have hit a new record low, despite President Biden’s promise to bring refugee admission numbers back up after the Trump administration’s major cuts, according to data obtained by the Associated Press. A total of 11,445 refugees were admitted to the United States during the 2021 Fiscal year, which ended on Thursday, according to a person with access to the information who spoke with the AP. That number does not include the tens of thousands of Afghan evacuees who have arrived in the United States as the U.S. withdrew all troops from Afghanistan, since many entered the country under “humanitarian parole,” a different legal status. State Department Official Leaves His Post While Criticizing Use of Title 42

A senior state department official is departing from his role in the Biden administration — and on his way out, he sent a “scathing memo” blasting the administration’s use of Title 42 to expel migrants at the southern border. In a legal memo dated October 2 and  obtained by Politico, the official, Harold Koh — a senior adviser and the sole political appointee on the State Department’s legal team — said that the use of Title 42 to expel migrants was “illegal,” “inhumane” and “not worthy of this Administration that I so strongly support.” Politico
