Advocates Discuss Federal Policy Ending Work Immigration Raids

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced a new policy that will terminate worksite raids that target undocumented immigrants. Instead, the agency will focus on predatory employers who manage unsafe worksites and pay unlawful wages. Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, discussed aspects that may be included in the new policy. Few Asylum Seekers Screened Under Title 42

Just over 3,200 asylum seekers have screened for U.S. humanitarian protection while Title 42’s expulsion policy has been in place. according to unpublished government data obtained by CBS News. U.S. Customs and Border Protection data shows that U.S. authorities at the southern border used the Title 42 public health order to expel migrants over 1,163,000 times since March 2020 without letting them seek asylum. Only 3,217 migrants who were processed under the public health law were referred for interviews with U.S. asylum officers, as of the end of September. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, only 272 of those asylum seekers passed their interviews. CBS News 

Biden Administration Defends Expelling Migrants

The Biden administration defended its use of Title 42 to deport migrants even while it lifts restrictions to allow fully vaccinated foreign nationals traveling from Canada and Mexico into the U.S. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Title 42 “remains in place” even if migrants who are seeking asylum are fully vaccinated. She informed reporters that the travel restrictions will only allow fully vaccinated foreign nationals with “proper documentation” to enter the U.S. “The Title 42 restrictions are really about protecting the migrants themselves, the DHS workforce and local communities,” a senior administration official said on Tuesday. “There’s a strong public health basis, for the moment, for continuing with the Title 42 restrictions.” CNBC
