Ain’t I A Woman, a campaign led by immigrant women home care workers who are fighting against 24-hour workday for home care workers, is disputing the Chinese-American Planning Council’s insistence it’s working for the same goal. AIWCampaign says CPC forces home attendants to work 24-hour shifts but only pays for 13 of those hours. The group also alleges CPC has been trying to avoid paying $90 million of wage theft in collaboration with 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. Earlier this month, CPC’s president released a press statement disputing AIW’s claims and reaffirming a goal to push for reform for all home care workers.

Government-Contracted Physicians Urge COVID Boosters for Detainees

Two medical contractors for the Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties are urging the department to provide COVID-19 vaccination boosters to detainees. Written whistleblower disclosures, this week, show they have warned of COVID-19 threats within ICE and CBP detention facilities since February 2020. Immigrant jails have seen an 800% increase in coronavirus infections so far in 2022. The doctors noted that the failure to give immediate and site-wide access to vaccinations and boosters further exacerbates the weak COVID-19 protective measures available to immigrant detainees. CBSNews

Texas’ ‘Operation Lone Star’ Led to the Arrest of 2,500+ Migrants. 900 are Still in Prison.

Texas authorities who have been directed to arrest immigrants from Mexico are facing an overwhelming number of cases, and unable to prosecute those arrested. They’ve arrested more than 2,500 migrants so far, and some 900 are still being held in prison. Gov. Greg Abbott’s  aggressive effort to crack down on immigration has led to many problems, including crowded jails, a lack of defense lawyers and judges to handle the cases. Just last month, a county attorney accused judges of impropriety, and the top county official promptly replaced the judges with others he chose himself. New York Times

Migrants Increasingly Trying to Enter the U.S. by Sea

A search is in progress for 38 migrants who went missing after their boat capsized at sea off the Florida coast. The disaster comes as Coast Guard officials continue to encounter people desperate to cross into the U.S. and doing so through the sea. Deteriorating conditions and shrinking opportunities in migrants’ home countries amid the pandemic have only exacerbated these crossings. The surge adds to the list of challenges the Biden administration is facing as it deals with the southern border crisis. New York Times

Frozen Bodies Near Canada-U.S. Border Identified as Family From India

The bodies found last week in a Manitoba field close to the border between Canada and the United States was identified as a family of four from India. The two parents, Jagdish Baldevbhai Patel, 39, and Vaishaliben Jagdishkumar Patel, 37, were found alongside their three-year-old son, Dharmik Jagdishkumar Patel, and 11-year-old daughter, Vihangi Jagdishkumar Patel. The High Commission of India in Ottawa, Canada, confirmed the news yesterday. An autopsy report shows the family died of extreme weather conditions, and authorities have speculated they may have died crossing the international border to the United States. CBC/Radio-Canada
