Documented is a non-profit news site devoted solely to covering New York City’s immigrants and the policies that affect their lives.
We provide original reporting on the ground-level impact of shifts in labor policy, law–enforcement practices and bureaucratic requirements, and on the effects of new federal directives. And we’ll keep you updated on the most important news from elsewhere.
Critical to our mission is ensuring we break the cycle of extractive immigration reporting, for that reason we rely heavily on listening to New York’s immigrant communities. Mazin Sidahmed, co-executive director
Mazin Sidahmed previously worked for the Guardian US in New York during the 2016 US elections, where he covered a variety of issues including surveillance and criminal justice, as well as the rise of hate crimes following the election. Mazin left the news desk to join the award-winning Guardian Mobile Innovation Lab where he helped develop new mobile-specific story formats. He started his career writing for The Daily Star in Beirut. He reported on the Syrian refugee crisis, weapons transfers to Lebanon and the plight of migrant domestic workers. Upon moving to the U.S., Mazin also contributed to Politico New York where he covered real estate, with a focus on the New York City Housing Authority, and City politics. Max Siegelbaum, co-executive director
Max Siegelbaum began reporting in post-revolution Egypt, where he wrote about the Egyptian judiciary, the dying infrastructure of Alexandria and an association of men with enormous mustaches, among many other subjects. He is a graduate of the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia University and has written for newspapers in Denver and Pittsburgh, Foreign Policy, VICE and STAT, among others. In the United States, he has investigated healthcare conditions for detained immigrants with mental illness, due process violations of immigration courts located inside prisons and an inconsistently enforced law in Colorado that’s designed to protect domestic violence survivors. Nicolás Ríos, audience editor
Nicolás Ríos is an Emmy-nominated multilingual Chilean journalist, who holds a Master in Digital Media Innovation from New York University and a B.S. in Social Communication from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He worked as a reporter and a documentary fixer for Vice Media; as an international news reporter, senior editor and broadcaster for CNN Chile, and as a freelance reporter for BBC World Service (UK), El Mercurio (Chile) and Daily Trust (Nigeria). After moving to New York City in 2018, he worked with Documented, Axios and Quartz on projects that involved making audiences central to content creation and product development. Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio, Report for America corps member covering immigration enforcement
Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio covers the immigration courts, immigration detention and U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement for Documented as part of the Report for America program. She was a national reporting fellow for The New York Times previously. She is from Los Angeles, and has previously reported in her hometown for the Los Angeles Times, worked for CNN in New York and Washington, and participated in The New York Times Student Journalism Institute. Andrea Bichan’s development background spans 10+ years of working to sustainably and responsibly resource nonprofit organizations in New York City. Previously, she served as the Development and Communications Director of VOCAL-NY as well as the Development Director at Immigrant Justice Corps. She has also worked as an organizational growth and institutional giving consultant for organizations of varying budgets across the country, including the Drug Policy Alliance, Upwardly Global, Everybody Solar, and the Humboldt Area Center for Harm Reduction.
