Documented is expanding its video production and editorial capacity with the addition of Katrine Dermody, an award-winning journalist, editor and video producer whose experience spans digital journalism, audience engagement and newsroom leadership.

Katrine has worked with Documented on a freelance basis over the past year. She now joins the organization as Deputy Editor, working alongside Deputy Editor Clarissa León. Her appointment comes at a time when New York’s 3.1 million immigrants face massive changes in immigration policy and enforcement practices and need trusted information in their languages and on the platforms they use more than ever.

The move marks an important step in Documented’s continued investment in multimedia storytelling and audience engagement as the newsroom works to meet immigrant communities where they are with journalism that is accessible, actionable and impactful across multiple platforms in English, Spanish, Chinese and Haitian Creole.

A recent survey that Documented conducted of 710 Spanish speakers in New York underscored the importance of video and video platforms for the community, in addition to uncovering other ways that information consumption is quickly changing. The popularity of Documented’s brand new Haitian Creole TikTok channel also underscores the increased community focus on multimedia formats.

Katrine’s previous experience includes deep digital media, video journalism and audience-focused storytelling at organizations including Doha Debates, Fusion and AJ+. Her experience spans every stage of the production process, from pitching story ideas and directing video shoots to overseeing podcast recordings, producing live events, coordinating editorial partnerships, managing breaking news coverage and developing publishing strategies tailored to different audiences and platforms.

In addition to her editorial expertise, Katrine brings more than a decade of experience leading and mentoring multidisciplinary teams of writers, producers, shooters, editors, social strategists and on-camera talent. She has also overseen production schedules and budgets while helping organizations build sustainable and effective editorial workflows.

Katrine’s skills will support Documented’s efforts to build sustainable video production capacity while maintaining the high editorial standards that underpin its journalism.

Katrine earned a Master’s Degree in Journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Urban Planning from Tufts University.
