The Trump administration has drafted a proposal that would expand the number of people required to provide biometric data to complete their immigraiton applications. It would also increase the scope of the government’s ability to demand information like eye scans, voice prints, DNA and photographs for facial recognition. The federal government wants to be allowed to request biometrics from immigrants who have received some benefit — including green cards or work permits — at any point until they are U.S. citizens, to ensure continuous “vetting.” BuzzFeed News
House Reps. Call for Investigation into ICE Serving Pork to Muslims
Dozens of House representatives are calling for an investigation into reports that an ICE immigration jail in Miami is “regularly” serving pork and non-halal meals to Muslim detainees. Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) sent a letter Monday to the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at the Department of Homeland Security calling for an investigation. The letter demanded that DHS look into a complaint filed on August 19, which claimed that ICE-run Krome Service Processing Center had been serving Muslim detainees pork since the coronavirus pandemic began.
