On Tuesday, 14 protesters were arrested during an anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement demonstration at New Jersey’s Bergen County Jail. One was charged with assaulting an officer. Those arrested were part of a group that held an overnight vigil across from the jail to stop the deportation of Marvin Jerezano Peña. He was arrested in Red Bank and had a federal deportation hearing scheduled for Tuesday in Newark. Some protesters blocked vehicles from entering and leaving the port used to shuttle inmates and detainees. Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton said at one point, demonstrators sat down in front of an ICE vehicle to block it from leaving the jail. Daily Voice

India Travel Ban Leaves Hundreds of Employees Stranded

Achintya Sharma had left New York City to attend his father’s funeral in New Delhi, India, when President Joe Biden announced a ban on travel from India to reduce the spread of a COVID-19 variant. This left Sharma and hundreds of other Indian people working in the U.S. stranded in India after they traveled for pandemic-related family emergencies. Siva, from Princeton, New Jersey, hasn’t seen his wife since she visited India to take care of her mother in February. A change.org petition has over 8,700 signatures to ask the federal government to allow visa holders who returned to India throughout the pandemic to be able to return to their U.S. homes. Pennsylvania County Prison Could End ICE Contract
Pennsylvania’s York County could end a contract to house Immigrant and Customs Enforcement detainees in its jail if the agency doesn’t offer better terms, local officials say. The county and ICE are currently in a 120-day negotiation period to decide if there will be a new contract before Aug 20. Bridget Cambria of the Aldea-People’s Justice Center said the contract termination at York could be a victory for those who don’t want to see immigrants detained, but not for the right reasons. That’s because ICE would transfer the detainees to other facilities for detention rather than release them. York Dispatch
