The Trump Administration has reportedly revived talks of taking executive action against birthright citizenship in its final weeks in office. President Trump has spoken about terminating birthright citizenship throughout his term. There is reportedly a draft of an executive order that would attempt to end birthright citizenship floating around, and it could be finalized before the Biden administration takes over. 2020 Census Count Moved to January
The U.S. Census Bureau announced it cannot form the first set of results from this year’s census by the Dec. 31 deadline and needs until Jan. 26 to resolve routine “processing anomalies.” This means census numbers that conclude each state’s congressional seats and Electoral College votes will be revealed after Trump leaves office. The bureau warned in May that the COVID-19 pandemic would delay its collection and tabulation efforts. But the Trump administration still pressured the bureau to stick with the original December deadline, especially after Trump moved to remove unauthorized immigrants from the census numbers. NPR
Trump Requests $2 Billion for Border Wall
The White House is demanding Congress allocate $2 billion to resume building Trump’s southern border wall, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Democrats are refusing to give any additional money for the construction. Ford O’Connell, a GOP strategist, said President-elect Joe Biden’s promise to halt wall construction has only incentivized Trump to build it. Groups on the left are urging Pelosi to remain forceful in denying new funding for the wall, and also want Congress to decrease funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection.
