Standoff at Delaney Hall

Inside Delaney Hall, immigrant detainees are holding a hunger strike to demand more humane treatment. Outside, protesters are facing off with ICE agents to amplify that message.

As many Americans gathered to grill and celebrate Memorial Day weekend, ICE agents and protesters were clashing outside Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center as detainees launched a hunger strike to protest the facility’s reportedly inhumane conditions.

Late Tuesday night, as demonstrations pushed into a sixth day, federal authorities arrested two people outside the New Jersey facility for reportedly assaulting ICE officers.

Scenes on the ground, as Jonathan Fernandes photographed for Documented, have been tense, confrontational and ongoing. Here’s a glimpse at what that has looked like.
