What happened in Colombia?
Earlier this week, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, leaving more than 200 people dead, thousands of buildings damaged, and a worsening humanitarian crisis enveloping the cities of Cali, Quibdo, Pereira, Bogotá, Medellín, and others. Newly sworn in president, Abelardo De La Espriella, has called for a state of emergency, mobilizing the military to assist with the search and rescue efforts.
This earthquake comes just months after twin earthquakes rocked Venezuela, which left thousands dead and more than 50,000 missing. As rescuers continue their search through the rubble, the number of dead and injured people in Colombia is expected to rise. Meanwhile, local aid groups and international organizations like the Red Cross have begun efforts to collect donations for the victims.
In New York City, which is home to nearly 330,000 Colombian nationals, restaurants and long-established businesses have turned their spaces into makeshift donation centers, where neighbors can drop off items like non-perishable food, hygiene products, water and other essentials to be shipped to those affected by the earthquake.

What items can be donated:
Every drop-in-center has their own list of items that can be donated. In general, here is a short list of items that are being accepted at most locations:
- non-perishable food like canned goods, rice and beans
- Personal hygiene products like soap, toothbrushes, diapers, tampons, etc
- First aid and emergency supplies like medical tape, antibiotic ointment, pain relievers, and more
Note: Be sure to call the donation center before bringing items in to be dropped off.
Can I volunteer my time?
Yes. Similar to the Venezuelan earthquake relief efforts, volunteers are needed to help organize, pack and prep boxes for shipping. Every donation center has different hours of operation as well as varying space capacity, so please call ahead if you’d like to give of your time.
