Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is an immigration designation that the U.S. grants to foreign people who cannot temporarily return to their home countries safely. It could be due to natural disasters, like major earthquakes, or human-created conditions, like armed conflicts. The U.S. has used TPS for countries like El Salvador, Haiti, Ukraine and Sudan. However, it has recently terminated some of these designations.
As of Sep. 3, 2026, here’s where designations stand, which are coming to an end, and what resources are available to those affected.

Which countries do still have TPS?
According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), these are the countries currently designated for TPS:
- El Salvador
- Lebanon
- Sudan
- Ukraine
Venezuela is currently listed on the USCIS website, but its 2021 designation was terminated in 2025.
When will TPS designations terminate?
- El Salvador’s TPS destination will terminate on September 9, 2026.
- Lebanon’s TPS designation will terminate on November 27, 2026.
- Sudan’s TPS designation will terminate on October 19, 2026.
- Ukraine’s TPS destination will terminate on October 19, 2026.
I currently have TPS. How will I be affected once my country’s designation period is terminated?
TPS provides beneficiaries with temporary protection from deportation and work authorization. Once the designation is terminated for your country, the protection you had from deportation is also terminated. This means that if you don’t have any other pending application for immigration relief, you could be susceptible to removal.
